The Uruguay Ghost of 1950..... Brazilians look away!
The Ghost of the 1950 World Cup final emerged when Uruguay condemned Brazil to deep introspection and soul searching by snatching the World Cup from the heart of Brazilian football, the Maracana stadium in Rio.
Uruguay were very confident and felt they were on their way to repeat this feat again in a few weeks time in the 2014 World Cup.
I later learnt how deeply this defeat still haunts Brazilians who were not even born when the defeat took place.
Arguably, Brazil were still bitter.  Well there were until Brazilian customs confiscated all the "Dulce de Leche" (a delicious incredibly sweet caramel spread), from the Uruguay team when they crossed into Brazil!!

Uruguay's sweet tooth was in evidence as a cheese and ham sandwich was loaded with jam too!

See the Ghost arriving in Brazil below!

Last Week I have mostly been...
Approx 93,000 people crammed into the Centenario stadium for the feisty World Cup final in 1930 between Uruguay and Argentina. It could not be agreed which team should provide the football. Following heated discussions ?Fifa stepped in with a solution.  The first half was played with a ball from Argentina, the half ended
Argentina 2 Uruguay 1
A ball from Uruguay was used in the second half, with the final score
Argentina 2 Uruguay 4!
?
There is a small moat running around the pitch and the museum was being redecorated but its still worth a visit.
